When most people hear the words identity theft, they think of a serious criminal act. The illegal kind of identity theft is not a good practice. Please don’t get it twisted, I am not suggesting criminal activity! However, identity theft can be a positive thing. It has been said that “the next best thing to being great is to model greatness.” I propose identity theft as a method of creating mentors to follow and imitate in order to create a new more successful you. Duplicate their identity so that you can attain the same success that they have, NOT steal their possessions. Your goal in copying their identity is to determine what motivates them, glean wisdom from their experiences, examine how they live their lives on a daily basis, and understand why they make certain decisions.
If you want to accomplish a certain level in your career, you must examine and duplicate the people who are the leaders in the area you are pursuing. Your target person may be someone you know personally or someone you admire from afar through reading their books, watching them on You-Tube or DVDs, listening to them on CDs, or reading about them in magazines. You may need to model several different people; each with unique strengths.
Here are a four ways to implement “identity theft” in order to reach your goals and become the person you desire to be:
- Target three people you want to duplicate. Write their names in a notebook. Identify and record the reason you believe they are exceptional and what makes them unique.
- Research their background. Find out the schools where they were trained, their employment history, the organizations they belong to, identify their mentors, discover their personal pet peeves, what do they watch on tv, what magazines they subscribe to, and what books they find interesting. What interesting things can you find out about them on Google?
- Research their daily habits. Do they arise early or sleep late. Are they coffee or tea drinkers? Are they sedentary or do they exercise on a daily basis? Are they spontaneous or careful planners? Are they an introvert or an extrovert? What are their favorite sayings and quotes? Study them like a book.
- Pursue the presence of your target people. This does not mean that you must have lunch with them on Friday. However, you may want to review some of the information you already have and develop a strategy on how to imitate the keys to their success.
Jesus Christ understood using this method of success in John 12:26 he said “If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also…”
We all must follow Jesus Christ, He is the ultimate person to imitate. He even said that if you follow Him, you will be where He is. The real question is: Who on earth are you following and duplicating? I can predict your future by determining who you identify with daily. The people you model your life after determine your success and place in the world. You must carefully choose whose identity you want to steal.
