Identity theft -- a form of fraud in which someone pretends to be someone else by assuming that person's identity, typically in order to access resources or obtain credit and other benefits in that person's name.
When most people hear the words identity theft, they think of a serious criminal act. The illegal kind of identity theft is not a good practice. Please don’t get it twisted, I am not suggesting criminal activity! However, identity theft can be a positive thing. It has been said that “the next best thing to being great is to model greatness.” I propose identity theft as a method of creating mentors to follow and imitate in order to create a new more successful you. Duplicate their identity so that you can attain the same success that they have, NOT steal their possessions. Your goal in copying their identity is to determine what motivates them, glean wisdom from their experiences, examine how they live their lives on a daily basis, and understand why they make certain decisions.
If you want to accomplish a certain level in your career, you must examine and duplicate the people who are the leaders in the area you are pursuing. Your target person may be someone you know personally or someone you admire from afar through reading their books, watching them on You-Tube or DVDs, listening to them on CDs, or reading about them in magazines. You may need to model several different people; each with unique strengths.
Here are a four ways to implement “identity theft” in order to reach your goals and become the person you desire to be:
Jesus Christ understood using this method of success in John 12:26 he said “If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also…”
We all must follow Jesus Christ, He is the ultimate person to imitate. He even said that if you follow Him, you will be where He is. The real question is: Who on earth are you following and duplicating? I can predict your future by determining who you identify with daily. The people you model your life after determine your success and place in the world. You must carefully choose whose identity you want to steal.
I met a relative this past weekend. I knew that he was unemployed and I did not understand why. He was able bodied, attractive and articulate. However, I immediately knew the reason when we were introduced. He did NOT know how to shake hands. He made three MAJOR mistakes that were absolutely wrong.
1. He did not look me in the eye.
2. He did not verbally say his name or introduce himself.
3. He gave me a limp noodle handshake. (I was shocked at this coming from a male)
Knowing how to shake hands is crucial to success in the business world!!! This is true for every facet of business. From the construction site to the corporate boardroom, shaking hands is the American way to seal the deal. If I did not know this relative's immediate family, my first impression would be that he was lazy, ignorant, and had no clue about how to shake hands in a business environment. Few things can reverse a bad first impression. As you seek the face of God for your new position, use some wisdom and learn basic business etiquette. This one small gesture (a handshake) can make or break a business deal or employment offer.
Here are six tips for shaking hands the correct way:
1. Introduce yourself. Keep it short and simple. Your name and your position or candidate position.
2. Look the person you are meeting in the eyes.
3. Do not pump your hand.
4. Do not offer a limp noodle hand, make it gentle but firm.
5. Move your elbow not your shoulder.
6. End the handshake after 3 seconds
"Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding; For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, And her gain than fine gold." Proverbs 3:13-14
Oh no, you can’t lay me off!!!! I have made too much money for this company! How can this be? Have I not been loyal? Am I not one of the best? What did I do wrong to get this kind of treatment? Should I have stayed later and come in earlier? Maybe I should have not taken any vacation time?Is there anything I could have done differently? NOTHING.
Nothing can stop the actions when your time is up on an assignment.
The first time I got laid off it was a shock to me. I had been working for a major telecommunications company for almost nine years. The company was down-sizing and my name was on THE LIST. It was the first job I landed when I left school. I had learned a great deal about telecommunications and I had made lots of friends at work. At first, I was embarrassed. I thought I would never be asked to leave. Next, I was scared...what was I supposed to do now? Even though I had great credentials, I thought my world had come to an end. I actually became sick and went into a deep depression. I was mourning like someone close to me had passed. One thing you must realize is that the joy of the Lord comes to give you strength to put your life back together. You must look to the hills where you help comes from. God can turn things around for you in the twinkling of an eye. You must believe that He can and that He will. Rejoice in the Lord and you will have a clearer perspective of how blessed you truly are. In the mist of my time being unemployed I worked the hardest at keeping a positive attitude. You attract positive people and actions into your life when you stay positive. Someone once said “your attitude determines your altitude.” Do all you can to get JOY!!!!
One way to find joy is through music. Find some upbeat songs that you enjoy b(see some of the tunes on my h….then sing until you cannot sing any longer!! Your praise will give you joy and the strength to overcome anything bad in your career!
I'm a person who loves to share information. I understand how painful and traumatizing a work transition can be. However, I have overcome unemployment and under-employment and I am here to encourage you to continue in your search because the right opportunity is within your reach. I created this blog to help friends cope with career challenges. Feel free to add any comments.
